Compact transformer substations for submersible pumps

Compact transformer substation for submersible pumps are intended for receiving of 3-phase AC power (50 Hz) at voltage 6 kV, its converting and for supply, control and protection of submersible electric motors with a capacity of no more than 500 kW for pumping facilities of submersible centrifugal pumps at water intake multiple well platforms.

Submersible centrifugal electric pumps drive a special submersible electric motor. On the surface, the electric motor is powered by electricity supplied via a cable from a compact pre-fabricated modular transformer substation for submersible pumps, which contains all control and measuring equipment and automation.

Technical data of CTS

The CTS is divided into three compartments: the high-voltage switchgear devices compartment (HVSD), the transformer compartment, and the medium-voltage switchgear devices compartment (MVSD).

The HVSD compartment contains the following:

  • high-voltage input cell with a cable input box;
  • auxiliary transformer cell;
  • auxiliary equipment cabinet

The transformer compartment contains the transformer TMPNG-1000/6-UHL1. During transportation to prevent accidental displacement of the transformer, it is fixed to the guide rails with bolts and steel stretchers.

The safety system of the CTS provides the following functions:

  • control over opening of the block box doors;
  • control over opening of water well cover doors;
  • telesignalization “fire (smoke) of the block-box”;
  • telesignalization of unauthorized access to the block box.

Monitoring and control cabinet CTS is based on Mvisor MB/04-micro device (central controller VP-2111 “IPC-DAS”), which provides:

  • controlling the operation of the pump motor in automatic mode;
  • switching off the pump motor by pressure limit values in the pressure pipe;
  • automatic switching off of the pump motor on high level in the surge balance tank of the site (telecontrol signal from Emerson DeltaV controller of the upper control level);
  • automatic switching off the power supply to the 6 kV block-box on the signal “fire in the block-box”;
  • control over the condition of the pump unit;
  • condition monitoring and control of the blower in the water well cover;
  • temperature control in the block box;
  • receiving and processing information from instrumentation devices installed in the pressure pipeline of the water well cover, as follows:
    • water consumption
    • water pressure
    • water temperature
    • the level of gassiness in the water well cover;
  • formation of the telemechanics signal “switch on the blower of the water well cover” in case of increased gassiness (10% LEL) in the water well cover or when the button at the entrance to the cover is pressed;
  • formation of the telemechanics signal “switch on the light and sound alarm of water well cover gassiness” in case of increased gassiness (20 % LEL) in the water well cover;
  • formation of a signal for switching off the exhaust blower of the water well cover in 10 min. after removal of the 10% LEL signal or in 10 min. after forced switching on of the water well cover blower;
  • interaction with the upper control level through RS 485 serial interface using ModBus RTU protocol.

The CTS has the following types of protection:

  • input load breaker with fuses and the possibility of disconnection in case of fusible link burnout provides protection in case of overload, short-circuit currents and against operation in part-phase regime. It is possible to switch off the load breaker from the fire alarm system;
  • protection against voltage rise by means of overvoltage suppressors;
  • protection of auxiliary circuits against overload and short-circuit currents.

There are interlocks in the CTS that do not allow:

  • switching on of the load breaker grounding blades when the main blades are switched on. Provided by the construction of the load breaker;
  • switching on the main blades of the load breaker when the grounding blades are switched on. Provided by the construction of the load breaker;
  • opening of the high voltage input cell door when the grounding blades are not switched on. Provided by the construction of the CSR-306 cell.

Soft start devices of submersible pump are designed to provide soft, shockless start of high-voltage electric motor of submersible pump.

Soft start of the electric motor is achieved by forming a preset rate of voltage rise on the motor from zero to nominal value. Regulation of motor voltage is provided by phase control of thyristors of the soft starter according to the set current diagram.

Acceleration of the motor to nominal speed is carried out by the microcontroller of the soft starter device. After the motor has reached nominal speed, the soft starter device gives a command to switch on the bypass high-voltage vacuum contactor, and the motor is directly connected to the network.

Soft start devices allow to limit in 2-4 times the in-rush currents of electric motor, to save electric energy due to rational use of power-consuming equipment, to reduce voltage dips in the network during electric motor start-up, to significantly reduce shock mechanical loads on electric motor bearings and ESP pump units.

Fire-fighting system

CTS is equipped with an autonomous powder fire-fighting system, which is intended to detect and fight fires independently of external power supplies and control systems, as well as to issue warning signals with the activation of fire light sirens.

An autonomous fire-fighting system provides the opportunity to:

  1. launch the powder fire fighting modules when the temperature of the ambient air reaches 72 °C ( 1st level of operation) and 85 °C ( 2nd level of operation);
  2. launch the powder fire fighting modules forcibly by the duty operating personnel.
