It includes hydroelectric power stations (HEPP). Electricity is produced from the energy of falling or running water. For this purpose dams are used on rivers to create the difference in height between the source and the water's outflow.

Under gravity water falls from the upper pool into the downstream pool through special channels where water turbines are located. The water flow spins the blades and the turbine drives the generator. Pumped storage power plants are a special type of hydroelectric power plants. They cannot be considered as purely generating capacities since they consume almost as much electricity as they produce, but such stations are very effective to supply high peak demands.
